Reveal: Powder Room

Powder Room RevealIt’s rustic, farmhouse, but still sophisticated; check out our finished powder room.

In case you missed it my husband and I completely rebuilt a long neglected 1934 cape. The adventure is a year and counting but we are loving our life as a family in this house. You can read all about how we ended up with the worst house and made it into our dream home.

The powder room is located in our mudroom which was formally a 1 car garage. We love having the mudroom and with the access to the garage, backyard, and kitchen it is the perfect location for guests, pit stops coming/going from the house, and emergency potty breaks from backyard play.

Since this area was formally a garage I really wanted it to feel like an outbuilding that was converted. My original plan was atleast one of the walls covered in a tongue and groove siding (most people would think it looks like “shiplap“) that we uncovered on much of the exterior of the house. I thought, hey it can look like an unconditioned addition that was converted to living space (since it was). However, it became too much for our budget or timeline…maybe someday.

Consequently I did want the bathroom to be simple but styled and here is what we came up with:

Vanity

The vanity was a craigslist for for $75! Here it what it looked like when I bought it:

Vanity Before

The front apron is a hidden drawer, the sink is a ceramic bowl made by the former owner/art teacher, and the faucet I replaced with this beautiful Danze copper faucet. Isn’t it gorgeous.

Mirror and Sconces

Both the mirror and sconces were open box finds; brand new but unable to be sold for full retail.

The sconces look like candles and I love the soft light they emit. They have a bit of a contemporary look with the square mount and larger candle.

The mirror is a barrel ring, a little imperfect and has a weathered metal finish. I love it.

Shelves

These back shelves might be my favorite part of this bathroom. They are made from our old oak stairs. The former staircase needed to be removed but we saved all the treads. I sanded these down then refinished them with a flat General Finish sealer. They are beautiful. Powder Room Reveal Shelves

We cut them to the width of the room and mounted them with inexpensive brackets from our local hardware store. The pictures are from one of my favorite places in Ireland, and a reminder of a fantastic vacation and the Clare sign is a reproduction from eBay. That cute little plant is still persisting despite total my total incompetence; I did not inherit my Grandpa’s green thumb.
