Simple Faux Fur DIY Rug

Have you ever looked at the cost of large area rugs? I needed an inexpensive solution and decided on this simple approach to a large DIY rug.

In case you missed it my husband and I completely rebuilt a long neglected 1934 cape. The adventure is going on a year and counting but we are loving our life as a family in this house. You can read all about how we ended up with the worst house and made it into our dream home.

The only floor we could keep from the “old” house was a sorry slate floor installed directly on a cement slab. It honestly isn’t my favorite floor but it wasn’t worth the cost of replacing.

Here is what the floor looked like when we bought the house:

And here is what it looked like during the final phases of construction:

This room is technically a 3 season room or “unconditioned space” however it is insulated and we have a gas insert for the fireplace set on a thermostat. The stone floor is always cold, especially in the winter, and we only crank up the thermostat when we are using the space. I really wanted this room to feel cozy, rustic, and unfussed. Hence my totally impractical burning desire for a massive white “fur” rug. I thought it would soften up the whole space and give the room warmth without heaviness. Then I looked at the cost of those gorgeous, massive, fur styled rugs like this:

Three problems:

  1. I couldn’t find one that was the size I needed (6ish x 11ish)
  2. I have 2 kids, a dog, and a cat so it needed to be easy to clean
  3. Area rugs were not really in the budget

So I made one. Follow below to do your own DIY rug.

1. Get the Materials

I purchased this faux fur from amazon by the yard along with a felt carpet pad. I thought the felt pad would be nice for cold winter days and provide an extra evel of comfort on the stone floor. Grand total: about $150 for a 6 x 11 rug

2. Dry Run

To start I laid out the carpet pad to make sure I liked the placement and size and kind of laid the faux fur over it to get an idea of how it would look. I wanted to be absolutely sure before I made any alterations to the products.

3. Cut

I then cut the bundle of faux fur in half creating (2) 5’5” x 6’ sections. Be prepared for the shedding- after handling and cutting the material it looked like I was in a wrestling match with the Yeti. After cutting I washed it two or three times to help with the shedding, drying it each time on air.

4. Velcro

Finally I attached velcro tape to the bottom of the fur fabric and the top of the carpet pad.

Voila. DIY faux fur rug. So easy.

You could easily do this with other colors although I would be sure to stick with a voluminous fabric. I love the look and am excited that I can just throw the top in the wash when it gets dirt.
