The Morning Fawn
I saw a fawn this morning. Around 5am the still morning air was heavy with the sounds of waking wildlife. It emerged from the brush with slow but steady steps and then froze. The babe sensed my presence, it’s ears and tail perked trying to localize the potential danger and then confidently leapt away through the break in the hedgerow.
The sighting felt symbolic. After recently reading Miracle Morning I decided to wake everyday with intention.
Four weeks ago I felt paralyzed. I knew that I wanted more out of life; to grow my business, to get healthier, to have time to enjoy family and friends but I felt trapped. We were treading water in our real estate investment company because I could not figure out a way to meet all my obligations and grow my business. I was exhausted and felt I did not have 1 extra oz of energy to exercise, make better food choices, or spend quality time with the people I love. I knew what I needed to do; find hidden value in my investment properties, get more sleep, wake earlier, be more productive, be present. I just couldn’t figure out how to make that happen. Then I read that book.
Just like that fawn I initially took only small, slow, but deliberate steps; waking without hitting snooze, recording my gratitude, and reviewing my goals. As I became more focused I began to enjoy starting each day with success and then it grew. I now listen to podcasts or audiobooks while driving, biking, or doing tasks around the house. I found another solid investment property and then found a way to finance it, started the blog, and tackled a pile of paperwork that was festering on and then under my desk for 2 years! I allowed a strained relationship with my brother to grow because I took time to listen to his needs. I get to enjoy family time. I may not look different but I feel different; stronger, calmer, confident, happier, and productive. It turns out none of it was as difficult as I had convinced myself it would be. Now I am moving at an accelerated rate toward my goals. I know what I want, what direction I need to head, and am sure of the next few steps.
So often in life we allow obstacles to halt our progress; fear, lack of knowledge or confidence. Tackle them. Are they real or perceived? How can you take action to move past them? Sometimes you just need to take the first step, then the next, and then the next. Know your goals but don’t let them overwhelm. Be aware of risks and then make movements in the right direction. In the moment it may feel like we are making no progress, but reflection and regular assessment will allow us to ensure we are advancing and adjust as necessary. Find a way to center yourself, be grateful for what you have, and tenacious about what you want.
That fawn very recently could not bear its own weight. First it stood, then took one step followed by another, now it is running through a field. You have a choice to lie there and let life pass you by or get up and make it happen. What are your recent achievements? What do you want to do? Who do you want to be? What can you do today to start that transformation?
